Question 18
A mother's duties, such as calming, nursing and protecting her child, often conflict with preserving prayer at the beginning of its time. Sometimes, when time is tight, a woman must choose between meeting her child's urgent needs and performing an obligatory prayer within its time. What should she do, and which should she give priority to?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Whoever wants something prepares for it. If a woman wants, for example, to perform the noon prayer at the beginning of its time and fears that her infant will need nursing when the prayer time begins, she can offer to nurse the child half an hour before the prayer time enters, and likewise with other matters. But if something unexpected occurs, then she should first make her infant's condition settled and then turn to prayer, because otherwise she may become occupied during her prayer with thinking about the unsettled condition of her infant.
