Question 10

My Imam, I come to you seeking guidance in my confusion concerning my dear father, who suffers from kidney disease. The illness has exhausted him and weakened his ability to respond, and at times after kidney dialysis he becomes so severely fatigued that he cannot keep his balance. He is constantly worried about prayer, but sometimes he is unable to pray. My question, my master, is whether his daughters or son may pray on his behalf only at times when severe fatigue, exhaustion, and involuntary sleep overcome him. I also ask you to send me a supplication for my sick father's recovery.

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

First, by God's permission your request was conveyed to Sayyid Ahmad al-Hasan, and God willing he supplicated for the person for whom you requested supplication. As for performing prayer on behalf of the sick person—may God heal him—the ruling is: it is not permissible to perform the obligatory prayer on behalf of a sick person. As for how a sick or incapable person performs prayer when unable to perform its familiar obligations, this is explained in The Laws of Islam, Book of Prayer. The text states: 'If the person is able to stand independently, standing is obligatory. Otherwise, the person must rely on whatever enables him to stand; relying on a wall is permissible even when one is able to stand without it. If the person is able to stand for only part of the prayer, he must stand to the extent of his ability; otherwise he prays seated. If a seated person can stand for the bowing, he must do so; otherwise he bows while seated. If he is unable to sit, he prays lying on his side. If he is unable to do that, he prays lying on his back, and in the last two states he indicates the bowing and prostration by gestures. Whoever becomes unable to maintain a state during the prayer moves to the state below it and continues—for example, one who is standing and becomes unable sits, one who is seated and becomes unable lies on the side, and one lying on the side and becoming unable lies on the back; likewise in the reverse direction. Whoever is unable to prostrate raises the object on which he prostrates, and if unable to do that, indicates the prostration by a gesture.' If the illness reaches the point of unconsciousness, prayer is not obligatory upon the unconscious person. The following question and answer was also given in Jurisprudential Answers — Book of Prayer: 'Q134: A sick person may, because of illness, lose sound awareness and become confused about the times of prayer and the rulings. Does prayer remain obligatory upon such a person? If the person recovers, must the person make it up, or if the person dies in that state, must the eldest son make it up? A: If the person is aware that prayer is obligatory upon him, then he must pray within the limits of what he is capable of, which I have explained in The Laws and elsewhere. But if the illness overcomes him to such an extent that he loses awareness and, even while awake, no longer understands that prayer is obligatory upon him, then his condition is like that of an insane or unconscious person with respect to the obligation of performance and make-up prayer being lifted from them.' Alaa al-Salim / 20 Rabi' al-Thani 1433 AH.
