Question 106

Sometimes the required number for Friday prayer is not present at noon, at the beginning of its time, but becomes available two hours later, after the people have already prayed the noon prayer. Must they repeat the prayer as Friday prayer once the required number gathers? What if they have not yet prayed the noon prayer?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

Establishing Friday prayer is recommended when there is no specifically appointed imam for the prayer. It is obligatory when there is a specifically appointed imam whom the Infallible Imam appointed, or whom a person authorized by the Imam to appoint Friday-prayer imams has appointed. Such an imam must establish Friday prayer when the required number and the other conditions are present at noon. If the required number is not present at noon and the imam performs the noon prayer, the imam is not required to establish Friday prayer afterward. But if the imam delays the prayer after noon until the required number is complete, then the imam must establish Friday prayer as long as its time remains. When it is known that there is an appointed imam for the prayer, attending with that imam or at the place designated for Friday prayer is obligatory; when it is known that Friday prayer is being established, attendance is obligatory.
