Question 11

Is ghusl for touching a corpse obligatory if we touch a patient who is clinically dead before doctors have formally declared death?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

Ghusl for touching a corpse is not obligatory until the dead person's body has become cold as a result of death and there is certainty that the person is dead. This is stated in Al-Shara'i: ‘Ghusl is obligatory upon one who touches a dead human being before the body has been purified and after it has become cold through death.’
