Question 12
A mattress more than 25 cm thick became impure from a child's urine and cannot be washed with water because the water remains trapped inside. Some companies clean such mattresses using special equipment that applies only pressurized hot steam rather than liquid water. Does this method purify the mattress?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
It can be purified by delivering connected water to it, such as the water flowing through household pipes. The impure area can also be purified with steam. However, the actual substance of the impurity itself is not purified merely by applying steam; it must be removed, or consumed in a large quantity of water such as piped water, or the steam must be directed onto it for a relatively long period sufficient for the steam to remove the actual impurity and purify the area.
