Question 4
I am a retired soldier and my right foot was amputated below the ankle joint. I walk on the end of the foot. During surgery, the doctor reshaped the area so walking would not hurt: he changed the ankle bone from a vertical position to a horizontal one so I could walk on it. I read in Al-Shara'i al-Islam, in the chapter on wudu, that a person whose foot has been amputated does not wipe that foot if no ankle remains. I have followed what I read, but since then I have wondered whether that ruling applies to me or not.
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Act according to what is stated in Al-Shara'i al-Islam and there is no need for doubt: ‘If part of the place of wiping has been cut off, he wipes what remains. If the amputation is from the ankle, wiping the foot is no longer required.’
