Question 62
I am an employee in a government company and my work is distributing employees' salaries. Every month, after distributing the salaries, there are surplus amounts that we collect for the next month to cover shortages or replace damaged notes. Sometimes what we collect is used up, but over four years money accumulated until it became a large sum. I wanted to return it, but I was told that the distributor had prepared the payroll lists and that if I gave the money to the new person, he would take it for himself and not return it to the company. What should I do with this money?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
You are supposed to return the money by a means through which you are certain that it will return to the company that entrusted you with it and that no one will seize it. If you cannot find a way to do this and the choice is confined to giving it to this person, who will take it for himself, or taking it yourself, then you may take it and distribute it among orphans, widows, and the poor.
