Question 64
I was planning to emigrate, and now I have received a notice from my city requiring me to serve on a court jury. I have never voted for or assisted America in my life. I do not know whether they will accept my refusal this time. Is it not forbidden in Islam to sit with disbelievers who do not support human rights and to judge whether a person is guilty or not guilty, especially when they use the standard 'beyond a reasonable doubt'? They are also known for methods that lead to great injustice in many forms. What is the ruling?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
You may participate on the jury if you are compelled to participate. As for a person who is not a believer, from whatever country that person may be, it is permissible to sit with the person, introduce the truth, and advise the person. We have no hostility toward any of the people. As for America, we have no hostility toward the American people, the land of America, scientific institutions, social institutions, and so on. Rather, we criticize the conduct of the American government, its tyranny, and its unjust position in the world, and we believe that unfortunately this position has continually been deviant and extreme.
