Question 62
In cafeterias and restaurants in Najaf and elsewhere, workers sometimes place chicken that was not lawfully slaughtered beside other foods such as falafel, eggplant and potatoes. When making a sandwich, the worker may have grease from such chicken on the same hand. Is a vegetable sandwich containing some grease from chicken that was not lawfully slaughtered permissible to eat? Likewise, if non-lawfully slaughtered chicken is placed above lawfully slaughtered chicken on the same grill and its fat drips onto it, what is the ruling on the lawfully slaughtered chicken?

No part of carrion may be eaten, even a very small amount, and it is also considered impure. However, before judging chicken in Najaf to have been improperly slaughtered, you must investigate: ask the seller about the chicken and its source and ask how it was slaughtered, then determine whether the slaughter was legally valid.
