Question 68
I apologize for asking about an issue for which your answers already exist, but applying the ruling has caused disagreement among some believers: whether chicken in Iran may be eaten. We are certain that the chickens are not slaughtered by an automatic machine, and slaughterhouses generally observe the other conditions such as facing the qibla, mentioning God's name and severing the four vessels. However, in some slaughterhouses the electrical stunning bath used to weaken the chickens is set above the permitted level and causes some chickens to die. Many believers therefore avoid eating chicken while others do not. Must we personally attend and inspect every slaughterhouse to know how the slaughter is performed? May chicken sold in Iranian markets be eaten?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Using electrical stunning or another method to weaken the animal or reduce its suffering during slaughter presents no problem and does not make the slaughtered animal forbidden for that reason. As individuals, you do not have to monitor every slaughterhouse in the city if you know that the city's slaughterhouses are required to apply the legal conditions of slaughter, such as directing the front of the animal toward the qibla, having a Muslim sever the four vessels by hand, and mentioning God's name. If that is the case, you may eat from all the slaughterhouses.
