Question 51
A previous question concerned tuna, which externally appears to have no scales but is lawful to eat. There are several other sea fish that are similarly smooth on the outside, including king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, yellowfin tuna, rabbitfish and cobia. Most are large predatory fish, while rabbitfish feeds on plants and is smaller. Are these fish lawful and treated like tuna? They are common in Gulf markets and widely eaten.

King mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla): it is permissible to eat. Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus maculatus): it is permissible to eat. Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares): it is permissible to eat. Rabbitfish (Siganus javus, Siganus canaliculatus, or Siganus luridus): all are permissible to eat. Cobia (Rachycentron canadum): it is permissible to eat.
