Question 88
I work as an emergency nurse. Sometimes young girls are brought to me for intramuscular injections, and I feel uncomfortable because some are four years old or older. A female nurse is available, but people may regard all children, male and female, as the same, or the child may have been brought by her father or brother who cannot go to the women's dressing area. Is there a particular age at which I may examine young girls for injections? Also, sometimes women arrive with somewhat complex wounds, burns or fractures and the female nurse declines to treat them because she lacks sufficient experience. We male nurses then have to treat them and expose the area of the wound, burn or fracture. Do we incur sin in doing this?

Looking and touching are forbidden, but the prohibition is lifted by necessity, such as the situation you described when a man must treat a woman because no woman is available to provide treatment or because the available woman lacks the required experience and competence. As for a girl who has not reached puberty, if a woman is available to treat her and there is no necessity, it is better for a man to avoid treating her when treatment requires looking at or touching areas between the chest and the knees. However, treating her is not forbidden, nor is touching or looking at the particular area of her body that must be treated.
