Question 65
May we eat ready-made kubba, hamburgers and shawarma sold in markets when the seller says the meat is Iraqi veal, but we are not fully reassured because we think many sellers may deceive people or use imported meat of uncertain origin?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
The statement of a Muslim seller is sufficient, and he may not be presumed to be lying about the type of meat unless there is evidence of that. There is no problem with imported red meat if there is reasonable assurance that it was slaughtered in a legally valid manner, even if it comes from a country whose population is mostly non-Muslim. I have personally seen videos of halal slaughterhouses in countries such as France and Australia and observed that the slaughter was legally valid and correct. Therefore, meat imported from such slaughter is lawful and there is no problem in eating it.
