Question 153

It is narrated from Hammad ibn Uthman and others from Abu Abd Allah that he said: ‘Do not recite poetry at night, and do not recite it in Ramadan by night or by day.’ Isma'il said to him, ‘Father, even if it is about us?’ He replied, ‘Even if it is about us.’ What is the ruling on reciting poetry during Ramadan?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

Being occupied with reciting poetry instead of worship during times of worship, such as Friday night and Ramadan—for example, holding a special gathering devoted to poetry during those times and reciting poetry there—is disliked. This was common in those times. But if the poetry expresses the truth concerning Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, God's blessings be upon them, and it is recited briefly in a particular gathering without arranging a special gathering devoted to poetry, then there is no problem and no dislike, whether on Friday night or during Ramadan, so long as it is brief and does not occupy the person throughout the time from worship and remembrance of God during these blessed periods in which a believer should be occupied with worshiping and remembering God.
