Question 106
We learned that some Sunni rulings treat facing the qibla when slaughtering as recommended rather than obligatory, and that some poultry plants therefore slaughter chickens facing away from the qibla. You have said meat in Muslim markets may be eaten, but that the method of slaughtering chickens should be checked. How are these rulings reconciled?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
There is no problem with the slaughter of a Muslim who testifies to the two testimonies of faith if the conditions of valid slaughter are fulfilled, and there is no need to investigate unless there is a reason to doubt the validity of the slaughter. As for poultry slaughter in particular, there are many problems surrounding it, so the source producer's method and manner of slaughter must be checked. If you find that the slaughter is performed correctly, with the front of the animal facing the qibla and with the conditions of valid slaughter that I explained previously, there is no problem; otherwise avoid it.
