Question 146
Does a guardian, such as a father or husband, have the right to declare something forbidden for his daughter or wife? I do not mean prayer, fasting and similar matters, but ordinary matters of life—for example forbidding a particular action or requiring her to refrain from it. If he forbids it, does that make it impermissible for her to do? More generally, what rights does a father have over his sons and daughters?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
No one has the right to forbid what God has made lawful. I have explained where the authority of a believing father applies, such as in the issue of marriage. The rights of husband and wife are explained in Al-Shara'i.
