Question 147

A head of household has reached an advanced stage of Alzheimer's disease and no longer understands anything. His wife now handles spending. She was told that she may use his money only for his treatment, food and similarly narrow personal needs, which creates serious difficulty when she needs to spend on guests or other household matters, especially because she has no other source of income. The house is also in poor condition, and she wants to sell it and buy another one, leaving some money to invest and use the returns to support both him and herself. May she do this?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

She may manage his money in ways that please God and in the manner in which he himself used to manage it while he was healthy. As for selling his property, such as the house, that is not permissible except when necessary, such as to provide for his treatment.
