Question 135
May a father strike his children as part of discipline and upbringing? What are the limits regarding the child's age and the reason that would justify it? May a teacher do so? Would the teacher need the father's permission, and may the father give such permission?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
A father may strike a child after the age of seven for disciplinary purposes, provided the striking is not harmful, is not directed at an area where harm might result such as the head, is not repeated, and only after the father has used and exhausted other methods—such as threatening deprivation of things the child likes or encouraging the child by promising or buying things the child likes—in trying to correct the child's mistake. In general, avoiding striking is better. A teacher is not permitted to strike the child.
