Question 136

A woman who is known from her condition to have bad conduct, commit zina, use drugs and disregard forbidden acts left a one-month-old baby girl with me—that is, with my wife—and then disappeared for months. We raised the child and she is now eight months old, and all of us have become attached to her. May I keep the girl and register her in official documents so she will not be deprived of schooling and other rights later? Her mother comes to see her only occasionally and has allowed us to raise her and not return her because she lives on the street and has no home.

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

There is no problem in raising her and registering her in official documents in itself. However, her actual status must also be made clear: she is not your biological daughter but an adopted child, so that the rights of heirs are preserved.
