Question 156
My brother and his family are believers, but he is not observant and has reached the point of drinking alcohol. We have forbidden him from doing so but he has not stopped. We have also had visions involving the infallible ones telling us to cut him off, not help him, and that the Imam wants to discipline him. His financial situation is extremely poor. What should we do? He is our brother, a believer, and needs our help. May we help him while he is violating religious law in this way?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
It is not permissible to give him money that he will use to buy alcohol. There is no problem, however, in helping him by buying food for him or meeting his ordinary worldly needs; indeed, doing so is recommended.
