Question 158

Today my father spoke to me about going out to demonstrations and said, ‘If you go out, I will no longer know you and you will no longer know me.’ I replied, ‘From now on I do not know you and you do not know me,’ and I left the house, but he came after me and brought me back. My master, by God I do not know what to do. My family are not believers in the call and oppose me in everything I do because they know that I am a believer. Sometimes they learn about my work for the call and oppose that as well. I want to work for the call, but they oppose me, so I oppose them and problems arise between us, and they say to me, ‘Where is obedience to one's parents?’ My master, is what I am doing right or wrong? Does it please you or not? How should I deal with them? May God grant you success and ease your affairs.

A father certainly sees you as a part of himself and perhaps loves you more than he loves himself. Deal with him in light of these realities and do not be harsh with him, may God grant you success. A good father does not deserve harshness from his children. Try to combine obedience to God with treating your father with every kindness and affection. I ask God to guide them, make the truth known to them, and make them a support for you. Do not forget me in your prayers. May God grant you success.
