Question 37
If a person disavows his parents because they do not believe in the Call, is he considered disobedient to his parents and one who severs family ties? What should he do?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
It is more appropriate for a believer to treat his relatives well and try to guide them by every means available to him. As for one's parents in particular, they must be treated with kindness even if they do not believe. God, the Exalted, says: 'But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but accompany them in this world with kindness, and follow the way of one who turns to Me. Then to Me is your return, and I will inform you of what you used to do' (Quran 31:15).
