Question 424
What is the interpretation of the noble verse: ‘Then return your gaze twice more; your gaze will return to you humbled and exhausted’ ([35])? Sender: Adham al-Tai - Iraq
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis, and grant them peace. The Exalted said: ‘The One who created seven heavens in layers. You see no inconsistency in the creation of the Most Gracious. So return your gaze: do you see any flaw? Then return your gaze twice more; your gaze will return to you humbled and exhausted’ ([36]). In these verses Allah, Glorious and Exalted, explains to His servants that He created the heavens according to a precise system and that divine laws govern them, so that those for whom Allah has prescribed entry may enter and ascend within them. There is no defect in them that allows anyone to enter, steal reports from them, or reach the divine wisdom within them in order to deceive people. There is no ascent within the heavens except through an authority from Allah, in accordance with the law of Allah, Glorious and Exalted, that applies to all His servants. As for the thieves-the devils among humankind and jinn-there is a guard that prevents them, and they cannot enter the Kingdom of the Heavens: ‘We certainly adorned the lowest heaven with lamps and made them missiles against the devils, and We have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze’ ([37]). This is a response to those who claim that Satan can have a share in reports coming from the Kingdom of the Heavens-by saying that the believers’ recurrent visions guiding them to Allah’s vicegerent can be from Satan. They have consequently made this a reason to reject the reports of heaven received by servants of Allah who turn toward Allah to know the truth. Here, Allah, Glorious and Exalted, responds to the obstructors of Allah’s path among the non-working scholars. Because they are deprived of the Kingdom of the Heavens through what their own hands have earned, they try, if they can, to deprive and misguide all people as well. You therefore find them ridiculing the Kingdom of the Heavens by every means they can in order to entice the people and prevent them from turning toward the Kingdom of the Heavens and seeing the truth from Allah. Today you see them desperately trying to ridicule visions and unveiling, which are the path of the prophets and the beginnings of Allah’s revelation, Glorious is He. All the prophets (a) were sent only to guide people to listen to the Kingdom of the Heavens, and throughout history every scholar of misguidance fought them by trying to ridicule the Kingdom and visions, aided in this by the people’s ignorance. The people are occupied with this world, while the prophets come and ask them to occupy themselves with the Kingdom and look into it. The scholars of misguidance try, as they do today, to keep the people as they are and prevent them from advancing even one step to hear the words of Allah, by attempting to ridicule the Kingdom and visions. Unfortunately, the people are ignorant of them, although they are the open path to knowing the truth from Allah and hearing the words of Allah, Glorious is He. The loser is the one who loses this greatest path among the paths of knowledge, and the one who stumbles is the one who follows the blind scholars of misguidance who can scarcely see their own hands. May Allah grant you success in every good and make you among those who see and those who hear and comprehend the words of Allah, Glorious is He. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
