Question 137
What is the ruling on the paid proxy prayers and fasts that were performed in the past, and on the money received for them?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
There is nothing upon you for fasting or prayer that you performed in the past in exchange for payment if you did not know that this was an innovation and was not legislated in the Quran or in the Sunnah from the Prophet and his household. As for payment you received for fasting or prayer on behalf of deceased people—those who died upon allegiance to God's Proof in their time, or whose condition you do not know—but which you have not yet performed, you may give the amount in charity on behalf of the deceased as explained previously. You may also make up the prayer and fasting for deceased people for whom you previously received payment, if at the time you did not know that prayer and fasting in exchange for payment were an innovation; but now you intend the qada on their behalf as an act of drawing near to God, not for the payment received in the past. As for making up prayer, qada performed on the twenty-third night of Ramadan is equivalent to one thousand months. Thus, if a person owed, for example, one year, ten years, or even one thousand months of qada, it is sufficient to make up one day on Laylat al-Qadr.
