Question 136

A believer gave me ten thousand as payment for hiring someone to perform prayers on behalf of his deceased father. What is the ruling on this entrusted money?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

Taking payment in exchange for performing prayer or fasting on behalf of a deceased person is invalid, because there is no intention of drawing near to God, Glorified is He, in such a prayer or fast. Were it not for the payment, the person would not pray or fast on behalf of the deceased, so the prayer and fasting are an act of drawing near to money rather than to God, Glorified is He. If there is no eldest son upon whom making up what the parents owe is obligatory, or if the eldest son exists but cannot make up what they owe and there is no volunteer to perform the deceased person's outstanding prayers and fasts, charity is given on behalf of the deceased: one mudd of food for each day of fasting, and one mudd of food for the prayers of each day and night. The money should therefore be used according to this explanation. Praise be to God.
