Question 134
If illness sometimes deprives a person of clear thought and causes confusion about prayer times and rulings, does prayer remain obligatory? If the person recovers, must the person make it up, or if the person dies in that condition must the eldest son make it up?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
If the person is aware that prayer is obligatory, the person must pray within the limits of what the person is capable of, as explained in al-Shara'i and elsewhere. But if the illness overwhelms the person to the extent that consciousness is lost and the person no longer discerns, even while awake, that prayer is obligatory, then the person's condition is like that of an insane or unconscious person with respect to the obligation of performance and qada being waived.
