Question 5
A woman has an irregular menstrual cycle. Every month she sees blood for more than twenty days. During the first days there are only drops of blood, continuing for more than ten days, and afterward the bleeding becomes strong and also continues for more than ten days, sometimes reaching a month. Should she regard the beginning days or the later days as her menstrual period, and what should she do in such a case?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
She regards the beginning of her menstrual days as the time when the bleeding begins strongly. She calculates the number of days of her period according to the number of days of the women among her relatives if their cycles agree, and as seven days if they differ. The remaining days in which blood is discharged, whether before the menstrual days or after them, are treated as istihada. I have explained its rulings in detail, and they may be referred to in Al-Shara'i.
