Question 7
Is masturbation forbidden even without inserting a solid object, meaning only external stimulation? What if the intention is to avoid falling into a greater forbidden act? And is ghusl required afterward?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Masturbation is legally forbidden. If you mean to compare it with committing the indecency of adultery or fornication—God forbid—then zina is more severely forbidden because it is among the major sins. Masturbation does not become permissible merely because a person does it thinking that this will keep him or her away from zina. Ghusl al-janabah is obligatory upon a person who has a seminal emission, meaning semen comes out with spurting and sexual desire. Likewise, ghusl is obligatory upon a woman if she has a sexual emission, as I mentioned in Al-Shara'i.
