Question 8

What is the ruling, in terms of impurity and purity, concerning a person whose religion we do not know, or whom we do not know to be religious or otherwise? I live in a country where most people are nonreligious or Buddhist; there are Christians, but they are few compared with the nonreligious population.

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

If the majority are as you described, then a person whose condition you do not know is treated as belonging to the majority until you learn otherwise. This concerns impurity and purity in matters such as food, prayer and the like. Nevertheless, you should treat people with kindness; good character is your ambassador to people in making the truth known to them.
