Question 66
A university professor who is among the Ansar helps students at the university by raising their grades. What is the ruling on this?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
He is a professor and knows his students. Grades in themselves generally have no value. However, it is not permissible for him to give a student an evaluation stating that the student is qualified to receive the degree while the student is actually unqualified. For example, a professor in an engineering college may not grant a passing certification from the college as an engineer to a person whom he knows does not deserve it and is not competent, because this will cause many problems. The criterion is the person's scientific level. Certainly, if the professor's evaluation is that the student deserves to pass, then he may give the student a passing grade even if the student's examination score by itself would not allow the student to pass.
