Question 174
What is the ruling on merchandise that was purchased and later discovered to have been stolen? How should it be dealt with? May one continue using it? Must one stop dealing with the seller, and must the authorities be informed? For example, I bought video tapes and later discovered they were pirated.
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
If the stolen property can be returned to its owner, it should be returned. If it cannot be returned, one should do what is possible, such as giving charity on behalf of the owner or praying for him. It is not obligatory to stop dealing with the seller, nor is reporting the matter obligatory.
