Question 176
There is a website for participating in global online markets where gold, oil and currencies are traded. To join, a person pays at least $300 and then trades through the site. I joined without knowing whether it was permissible, assuming it was lawful, but a believer told me it was forbidden. May I continue dealing with them until I recover the money I paid?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
Dealing is permissible if the buying and selling are real transactions. But if it is merely betting on prices rising or falling without any genuine purchase transaction involving actual commodities or particular shares, then it is not permissible. As for recovering your money, you may recover it from them.
