Question 178
I decided to enter a fifty-fifty partnership with a Christian in a European country to open a restaurant or cafe. Because restaurants here are often large and include several activities, I stipulated from the beginning that all meat be halal and that there be no alcohol, and he agreed. After the money was paid and contracts signed, I discovered that my partner wanted to include a 'microphone' activity: customers may use a microphone to give a speech, sing a song or present any item they like in return for paying the business a fee. I objected but could not persuade him to cancel it. I therefore see two possibilities: either I take half of all profits while intending that what reaches me is not from the microphone income, or I ask that the microphone income be separated completely and take half only of the remaining revenue, leaving me with a smaller share than my partner. I only want to ensure that the money entering my ownership is lawful. May I take half of the total profits including the microphone revenue, or must that revenue be separated?
