Question 180
A believer had a newborn child, and some coworkers gave him tangible gifts such as sweets. Later an incident occurred in which he was publicly identified as a follower of Imam Ahmad, and those coworkers began demanding that he return their gifts or their value. He returned the tangible gifts that remained, but some consumable gifts such as sweets had already been distributed. How should he deal with the value of those other gifts?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
If you mean whether they have a religious right to demand the return of what they gave you as a gift, then in reality they have no such right, especially when the gifts were food or other consumable items.
