Question 28
What is the interpretation of the verse, 'Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of God...' Does it apply now, or will it apply at the appearance of the Imam? I ask in relation to wanting to give some of my jewelry as a gift to the Imam.
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
This verse generally concerns property subject to zakat: whether a person hoards his wealth without paying its zakat, or someone has zakat funds in his possession and hoards them. At the time of the Qa'im's rise, it applies to anyone who owns wealth beyond his needs, keeps it, and does not give some of it for striving before the Qa'im. As for jewelry or gold that a woman acquires for adornment, it is not considered hoarded wealth.
