Question 27

I am a butcher, and my brothers among the Ansar make vows involving animals, aqiqah, and sacrificial animals. We collect the money and buy one or more animals according to the amount collected so that there will be enough meat to distribute among the families of the Ansar. At the time of slaughter, I do not know for which Imam I should intend it, and if it is an aqiqah I do not mention the name of the person for whom it is offered. Also, may the animal be slaughtered with any kind of knife?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

It is permissible to slaughter with a sharp iron knife. There is no problem if the knife is made from an alloy containing a proportion of iron, as is the case with knives commonly found in the market. Regarding a vow or aqiqah, you do not have to intend at the time of slaughter and cutting the vessels that this particular animal is for a particular vow or that this aqiqah is for a particular person. The intention of the person making the vow or arranging the aqiqah when giving you the money to purchase the animal is sufficient.
