Question 127

I have been married for eight years. My husband works, praise be to God, but to this day we own no house, car or other property. When one of my children becomes ill or I need something, I have no money. Each month when my husband receives his salary he gives us only a little for food and donates or gives away the rest, sometimes to people who are not needy or for unnecessary things, while my children and I remain in need. What is your ruling concerning my husband? When I have money I share it with him, but he shares his money with others. When I tell him I am not satisfied, he says my satisfaction does not matter. Is that correct?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

A husband is obliged to provide the obligatory maintenance of his family. He has the right to dispose of whatever remains of his money as he wishes—whether he spends it on his family, on himself, or in charitable causes that please God.
