Question 48

I direct my letter to you as a wronged mother suffering from severe depression. I am sixty years old, my health is poor, and I suffer from several illnesses because of my age. God, Glorified and Exalted, provided me with four daughters. I struggled to raise them, stayed awake for their comfort, worked with all my effort to give them security and ease, and labored for their education until they obtained advanced degrees. Praise be to God, I married them all. I do not want to make my message long, but my problem is with my eldest daughter, who is an academic doctor. She is married and, praise be to God, comfortable and financially very well off. She refuses to help me even though I need medical treatment and medicine and have daily needs for food and drink, and our situation is difficult. Her refusal forces me to lower my dignity as a mother to obtain even a little from her. She is even miserly in asking about me when I am ill. What should I do, by God? What is the ruling of Islam? She also asks that you pray that her daughter Nada build her a house, reunite her with her daughters, and keep away the harm of people seeking worldly interests.

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

Human culture agrees that a person should thank someone who has rendered him a service. How much more so when the services are many and, without them, that person would not have remained alive; and how much more when, at the time those services were rendered, the person was in a state of complete helplessness. At the very least, a person should remember that his parents cared for him in childhood, repay their favor, regard them like every benefactor who has a right to gratitude, and respond to their goodness with goodness. God, the Exalted, says: 'We have enjoined upon the human being goodness toward his parents. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning are thirty months, until when he reaches full strength and reaches forty years he says: My Lord, inspire me to be grateful for Your favor which You bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteousness that pleases You, and set right for me my descendants. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed I am of the Muslims' (Quran 46:15). I ask God to set your affairs right and turn the hearts of some of you toward one another, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.
