Question 109
I have a twelve-year-old sister who, praise be to God, has believed in the truth and wants to follow God's law. I told her some time ago that she became legally responsible from the age of nine according to the Hijri calendar, and she wants to wear hijab. But our father and mother strongly object, and every discussion of the subject leads to a serious argument. I know that in other situations you have advised brothers and sisters not to act in ways that repel people from the call, but I do not know the limits of this. Hijab is obligatory and part of God's law, while the Quran also commands goodness toward parents but says not to obey them in associating partners with God. Should we continue discussing the matter even though it always leads to an argument, try another way to persuade them, or should she simply wear the hijab and place them before the accomplished fact?
Ahmed al-Hasan Response:
I ask God to bless you and your family and grant you the good of this world and the Hereafter. He is my Guardian and He takes care of the righteous. Do not wait for your parents' opinion when obeying God, but treat them well and be dutiful to them in every circumstance. May God grant you success and guide your steps. Wear the hijab, and God willing He will make your affairs easy in what is best for your Hereafter and your worldly life.
