Question 156

I have stolen a great deal of people's property. I know some of the people I stole from, but I cannot return their rights because I fear imprisonment and because I do not have enough money. Almost everything in my home—blankets, furnishings, and other household items—is stolen or was bought with stolen money. What should I do about stolen funds still held by my partners that I have not received? I also took part with them in stealing an air-conditioning unit from a mosque, although I disliked doing so and they pressured me. I want to purify myself from these acts. What should I do?

Ahmed al-Hasan Response:

For genuine repentance to be realized, you must do everything you are able to do to return rights to their owners, but without causing harm to yourself. Regarding what you are unable to return, you have nothing to do except seek forgiveness and regret what you did, and God willing He will forgive you if He knows the sincerity of your repentance. As for unlawful property in your house, return whatever you can to the people from whom you stole it if doing so does not bring harm upon you, and give in charity what you are able to give in relation to the property in your house. As for stolen funds that remain with your bad companions, do not take them from them. Admonish them and remind them of God and the Hereafter, so that perhaps God may write their repentance through you.
